In one of the decisive rounds, he used an unusual trick known as the "Belarusian move," and thanks to it, he was able to pinpoint the location where the photo was taken closer than his opponent, rtvi.us reports .
GeoGuessr is a browser game where participants are shown random images from Google Street View, and they must identify their location on the map. The smaller the distance between the player's answer and the actual shooting location, the more points they receive.
Typically, participants rely on the surrounding landscape, inscriptions, road signs, traffic characteristics, and other clues. World championships for this game have been held since 2023.
In the final on September 5, Debre played against Frenchman Mathieu Hue, known as Blinky. Before the last round, players were shown a picture of a bridge over a river, with two fishermen on it. In the background were private houses, fences, and a greenhouse.
The Frenchman decided it was Ukraine, while the Hungarian unexpectedly placed the marker in Belarus. This decision surprised commentators, as Belarus does not have official Google Street View coverage.
However, the "Belarusian move" worked. The location chosen by Debre turned out to be closer to the real one. In fact, the photograph was taken in Russia, near the border with Estonia.
GeoGuessr fans highly praised the unusual decision. In the game's community, it was called one of the most memorable moments in the history of the competition, and it was noted that, according to their information, such a trick had not been used in championship finals before.
The essence of the "Belarusian move" lies in the assumption that if the landscape resembles Eastern Europe, one should take a risk and choose Belarus, even despite the absence of official Google Street View images.
