Autopsy Confirmed Actress Hayden Panettiere Died from Drug Overdose
An autopsy revealed that Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere, the former fiancée of famous Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, Xanax, and several other medical drugs, writes the BBC. She died in mid-August at the age of 36.
Panettiere is best known for her roles in the TV series "Heroes" and "Nashville". The actress did not hide that she had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for many years.
The coroner of Greenville County in South Carolina ruled the woman's death an accident. No injuries that could have caused death were found on the actress's body.
In addition to fentanyl and Xanax, metocarbamol was found in Panettiere's blood — a muscle relaxant that reduces muscle tone, as well as quetiapine — an antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of some mental illnesses.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, the use of which has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of people in the US over the past five years.
According to the coroner's office, emergency services personnel tried to resuscitate the actress and restart her heart, but they were unable to save her. The American Drug Enforcement Administration will also participate in the investigation into Panettiere's death.
According to the police report, when emergency services arrived at the actress's home, her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were with her. Hickerson had previously admitted to being violent with Panettiere.
Several months before her death, the actress published memoirs in which she detailed her drug addiction and postpartum depression. She wrote that she first tried drugs at the age of 16. This happened during the premiere of the series "Heroes," when a colleague gave her a pill, calling it a mood enhancer.
Panettiere later said that she did not understand the danger at the time and did not realize what addiction it could lead to. As an adult, she said, she could practically no longer live without alcohol and drugs.
The actress's brother, Jansen Panettiere, died of heart disease at the age of 28. In her memoirs, Hayden also wrote that he had problems with drug addiction, including using heroin and cocaine, which, according to her, ultimately led to his death.
