Last summer, Artsiom Makei studied for two weeks at Long Island University (USA). But, as his mother Viera Paliakova-Makei says, he returned and said that New York was not for him. And he found his alma mater in Minsk.

This year, the younger son of the late Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei and the director of the Theater for Young Spectators Viera Paliakova-Makei graduated from the Minsk International Gymnasium of Iryna Abelskaya — one of the few private educational institutions that were allowed to remain open.
The happy mother published a photo on Instagram with Artsiom, adorned with a "Graduate" ribbon, and captioned it: "My dear son".
On this occasion, Viera Paliakova danced in a parent's flashmob: "We lit it up a bit at our son's last bell. Yes, I am a mother and I can dance!" But she did not reveal the boy's future plans on Instagram.
It should be noted that Makei's son was previously interested in creativity. At 9 years old, Artsiom sang at his mother's creative evening. And at 10 years old, as part of the group "Niasumny Uzrost" (Joyful Age) with the Belarusian-language song "Faina" (Good/Nice), he tried to qualify for Junior Eurovision.
The group couldn't even reach the final of the national selection — Viera Paliakova-Makei then accused the jury of bias. But the story didn't continue.
At a meeting with her fans, the actress revealed that Artsiom's interest in creativity suddenly disappeared around the age of 15.
"He said: 'No, I don't want to, I'll go into international economics.' Then he struggled with mathematics for two years. Last summer he was abroad for a month and a half, even flew to New York. He studied at Long Island University for two weeks," Viera confessed.
She added that she paid for this trip together with her elder son Dzmitry (who graduated from medical university) — and for both of them, it was a rather difficult task financially.
"We were very stretched financially. We, indeed, then tightened our belts together for three months, nevertheless, we managed. Dzima and I are proud that we were able to send Artsiom there to study. And he returned, saying: 'No. I want to be like Dad, in international relations.'"
It seems this is the path the young man ultimately chose. Artsiom Uladzimiravich Makei can be seen on the list of people who enrolled at BSU this year. However, his name did not appear there immediately. It is entirely possible that Artsiom Makei only got into the paid department.
"Nasha Niva" found the young man in a video dedicated to Freshmen Day at the Faculty of International Relations.

Recall that 64-year-old Uladzimir Makei belonged to the liberal wing of Lukashenka's loyalists and was one of the few at the top who occasionally spoke Belarusian. In Soviet times, Makei was an officer of the Soviet GRU; in independent Belarus, he began a diplomatic career. Makei came to the post of head of the Presidential Administration and later Minister of Foreign Affairs through the office of Aliaksandr Lukashenka's personal assistant, which he took up in 2000 — this was after the disappearance of Viktar Hanchar and Yury Zakharanka, at a turning point in the nature of the Belarusian regime.
In November 2022, Uladzimir Makei committed suicide.
Uladzimir had two sons — the younger Artsiom and the elder Vital (from his first marriage).
In 2020, Vital Makei resigned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which observers perceived as a silent protest against election fraud and violence. In 2021, he criticized his father's department for rudeness and loss of moral compass. Currently, Vital's LinkedIn indicates that he lives in Poland and is the head of sales at "Kit" studio.
