Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for not concluding trade agreements with the Belarusian authorities, against the backdrop of a major US-announced deal to purchase Belarusian potash fertilizers. The leader of the Belarusian democratic forces stated this on September 22 in an interview with Deutsche Welle on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
«My message is this: now is not the time to trade with dictators,» Tsikhanouskaya said.
She thanked US Presidential Special Envoy John Koehl for his efforts to free another 25 Belarusian political prisoners. Tsikhanouskaya emphasized that it is important that the humanitarian direction does not grow into a political one and that Alexander Lukashenka is not recognized as the president of Belarus, because the Belarusian people do not support him.
The leader of the Belarusian democratic forces expressed hope that the Donald Trump administration would be able to achieve the release of all Belarusian political prisoners without, in her opinion, making excessive concessions to Lukashenka.
In a conversation with DW, Tsikhanouskaya also stated that the situation in Belarus is a matter of security for the entire region. She called on Western countries, while supporting Ukraine, to simultaneously take into account the Belarusian aspect.
According to her, when resolving the issue of the war in Ukraine, Belarus must not be overlooked. Tsikhanouskaya stated that the loss of the country's independence cannot be allowed, and Lukashenka, according to her, is "selling off" Belarus's sovereignty to Russia.
