In Grodno, a projection pedestrian crossing launched near Farny Church PHOTOS
In Grodno, near Farny Church, the city's first projection system for a pedestrian crossing has started operating. It was installed opposite the church and has already been switched on, writes AutoGrodno.
The State Automobile Inspectorate announced the new equipment on September 22. Additional lighting devices were installed at regulated pedestrian crossings on Kaluchynskaya and Karla Marksa streets, which project pedestrian traffic light signals directly onto the sidewalk surface.
Near Farny Church, green or red light lines are projected onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, the regular traffic light continues to operate in normal mode, and the projection serves as an additional safety measure.
The red line is located approximately one meter from the roadway. It is believed that it can additionally draw pedestrians' attention to the boundary they should not cross, and prevent them from getting too close to vehicles. This can be especially useful for people who have diverted their attention to their phone screen and are not looking ahead.
Previously, other lighting solutions were already tested in Grodno. On Azheshka Street, a projector was used to display a bright 'zebra crossing' directly onto the roadway, as road markings were not painted on the cobblestones there. This project was installed by a private company to demonstrate the capabilities of the technology, but the permanent use of such a solution was later abandoned.
Similar projection systems have already been used in other cities of Belarus. In Minsk, the first such projector was installed in 2022 near Hugo Chavez Park. Previously, at one of the crossings on Lenin Street, the traffic light signal was also duplicated by LEDs embedded in the sidewalk.
In Grodno, on Tkatskaya Street, near an elevated pedestrian crossing, experiments were also conducted with LEDs embedded in the asphalt. They blinked brightly during nighttime and attracted the attention of pedestrians. However, the experiment was not continued because the system could not withstand winter conditions and failed.
