Gloria Steinem "died peacefully" at her home in New York, surrounded by loved ones. For decades, she fought for women's rights, including reproductive rights, equality, and women's ability to control their own bodies.
Gloria Steinem was born on March 25, 1934, in Ohio. In 1956, she graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts, after which she lived in India for two years. Later, she returned to the USA and began her journalistic career.
In the 1960s, Steinem wrote about contraception, women's rights, and discrimination. In 1969, her essay on women's liberation following the Black civil rights movement made her one of the most prominent figures in the feminist movement.
Steinem believed that control over reproductive organs was one of the tools of authoritarian systems. In a 2023 interview with the BBC, she noted that, despite decades of progress, women had allegedly still not achieved all necessary rights. At 22, Steinem herself had an abortion in London when it was illegal.
In 1971, together with like-minded individuals, she co-founded Ms. magazine, which became one of the first publications dedicated to women's rights issues. Its pages covered sexism, equal pay, domestic violence, and the right to abortion.
Steinem also spoke out against the Vietnam War, supported the struggle for the rights of Black Americans and LGBTQ+ people. She emphasized the close connection between the fight against racial and gender discrimination and, along with other activists, contributed to the development of intersectional feminism.
Despite her critical attitude towards the traditional institution of marriage, in 2000, at the age of 66, Steinem married South African businessman and environmental advocate David Bale. He died of cancer in 2003.
Steinem continued her public activities until 2020. She wrote nine books, and in 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest civilian honor in the United States.
