Belarusian Railway is short of flatcar wagons. The reason is military transportation
Part of the wagons were used for exercises, but this does not explain the deficit.
In late August 2026, the Belarusian Railway experienced a shortage of empty, serviceable universal flatcar wagons with flooring, available for loading. According to information from the Community of Belarusian Railway Workers, some platforms have been allocated for military orders or reserved for upcoming dispatches. Because of this, other freight shippers receive fewer wagons or are forced to wait for their delivery.
The exact number of wagons involved, loading stations, train composition, and routes are unknown.
The timing of the platform shortage coincided with the conduct of another combat training event. From August 25 to September 10, the Armed Forces of Belarus are conducting an operational-tactical exercise with the branches of the Air Force and Air Defense forces. The second stage is to take place at the Russian Ashuluk training ground, where live firing by aviation and anti-aircraft missile units is planned.
But dispatches to Ashuluk explain only a small part of the current demand for platforms and are not the cause of the arisen deficit, activists note. The remaining wagons are allocated for other current or future military orders.
Weapons and military equipment in echelons are transported mainly on flatcar wagons. Tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery systems, engineering vehicles, and automotive equipment are loaded onto them. Personnel, property, ammunition, and fuel and lubricants are transported in other types of wagons. Wagons with explosive materials are placed in the train composition in compliance with established cover norms; empty wagons or wagons with safe cargo can be used as cover wagons.
A similar deficit was recorded in September 2021 during the 'Zapad-2021' exercises — at that time, the railway openly denied services to enterprises due to 'state orders on national security matters'.
However, there are no signs in the available data of a redeployment comparable in scale to January-February 2022 (on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine). There are no signs of a massive arrival of Russian units or the accumulation of echelons; only the fact of a shortage of platforms has been recorded.
