69-year-old Pole detained in Warsaw in connection with attack on Belarusian Maryna Nikandryna
He was forbidden to approach or contact her.
A 69-year-old Polish citizen was detained and brought to the District Prosecutor's Office Warsaw-Żoliborz in connection with the attack on Belarusian Maryna Nikandryna. This was reported to Radio Svaboda by Piotr Skiba, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.
The man was charged under Art. 257 in conjunction with Art. 119 §1 and in connection with Art. 11 §2 of the Polish Criminal Code. This concerns, among other things, public insult, violation of bodily integrity, as well as violence or unlawful threat due to national origin.
According to the prosecution, the suspect did not fully admit to committing the alleged act. He denies hitting Nikandryna and threatening her life. The man also stated that he has no prejudice against people of other nationalities and that, in his opinion, Nikandryna sought publicity.
Police supervision was imposed on the suspect; he was forbidden to approach or contact Nikandryna.
The incident occurred on May 30 on the sidewalk near the Rondo ONZ metro station in central Warsaw.
As Nikandryna previously stated, an unknown man rudely ordered her to move aside. Hearing her accent, he began to insult her and shout for her to "get out to Ukraine." When Nikandryna said she was Belarusian, the man, according to her, began to send her to Belarus and call her a "Russian doormat."
Nikandryna claimed that the man also hit her. She recorded part of the incident on video, which she handed over to the police.
On July 31, the prosecution launched an investigation into the public insult of Nikandryna, the violation of her bodily integrity, and the threat to her life due to her national origin. At that time, the attacker's identity had not yet been established.
