In Oleshky, an estimated 2 to 4 thousand people still reside. They face hunger as the poor harvest residents grew in their gardens ends with the end of summer.
The Ukrainian city south of the Dnieper is only four kilometers from Kherson, but it's impossible to cross this distance. Russian troops have held Oleshky surrounded for several months. One cannot enter or leave, Bild writes.
The last delivery of food, according to Ukrainian sources, was on May 26.
In a desperate attempt to survive, the remaining residents steal from each other. They slaughter their chickens because they have nothing left to feed them. When Russian soldiers shelled a humanitarian aid convoy, people immediately pulled apart the remnants of the cargo that survived the attack. Barter has replaced money.
People dying on the streets usually remain lying there and are eaten by dogs. Children beg for food. Attempts to leave the city end either in death, or Russian soldiers send people back.
“Go back and die there,” they say and laugh.
Roads are mined, drones circle in the air — their operators play human safari. Death is the only thing guaranteed in Oleshky. And now winter is on the doorstep.
Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have been trying for several months to negotiate the evacuation of the city.
However, the Russian side still refuses to provide a humanitarian corridor and cease fire, instead holding hundreds of people hostage.
