The killer of a Ukrainian intelligence general was blown up in Donetsk. The operation was kept secret for over a month
Ukrainian special services blew up Oleg Shutov's car. He, as the SBU claims, personally planted a bomb under the car of Major General Maksym Shapoval of Ukrainian military intelligence in Kyiv.
Oleg Shutov was blown up on July 27 in occupied Donetsk, writes LB.ua citing sources in the Ukrainian special services.
An improvised explosive device was planted in a Subaru, which Shutov used to drive to the "Dynamo" sports complex in the Leninsky district of Donetsk.
Local pro-Russian resources then reported a "night drone attack," which allegedly injured the head of the sports wrestling federation.
Shutov indeed headed the Judo and Sambo Association of the so-called "DPR," and at the same time, Shutov was an employee of the so-called "Center for Special Operations of the Ministry of State Security of the DPR." In 2024, this department was liquidated, and its functions were transferred to the local FSB office.
The Security Service of Ukraine first publicly named Shutov as the killer of Major General Maksym Shapoval in April 2019.
"It was this person who, on June 26, 2017, planted an explosive device under the car of Ukrainian intelligence general Maksym Shapoval. Today, we are for the first time publicizing details about the perpetrator of this terrorist act," stated then-SBU head Vasyl Hrytsak.
Shutov rented an apartment in the building where Shapoval lived and also rented a parking space next to the general's car. On June 27, 2017, Shapoval's car exploded in the Solomyansky district of Kyiv. The general died. According to the SBU, an hour after the explosion, Shutov collected his belongings from the rented apartment and left for Russia, and from there to Donbas.
Shutov was also linked to the murder of Colonel Oleksandr Kharaberyush, head of the SBU counterintelligence department in Donetsk Oblast. His car exploded in Mariupol on March 31, 2017.
Information about Shutov's liquidation was not published for over a month for security reasons – until the sabotage group returned from the occupied territory.
