Lieutenant Colonel Zara, whom security forces consider Sakhashchyk's analyst, found in KGB pre-trial detention center. How he ended up in Belarus is unknown

As Nasha Niva learned, retired Lieutenant Colonel Dzmitry Zara returned to Belarus under obscure circumstances.

Dzmitry Zara was born in 1981 in Kobryn. He is a professional military officer, who started his service in internal troops unit 5448, then transferred to Maryina Horka. The details of his career are unknown to us. Towards the end of his career, Zara held an administrative position at the 50th Mixed Airbase in Machulishchy, where he served until his military pension.

Zara left Belarus no earlier than April 2022; in May of the same year, he started an Instagram account where he began publishing photos from the European Union.

Dzmitry's family remained in Belarus. This includes his wife, whom he had been with since college, as well as three children — the eldest is now 17 years old.

In Europe, Dzmitry Zara was engaged in industrial alpinism, and was also a skydiving instructor — as a paratrooper, he had a large number of jumps in Belarus. He planned to pass all necessary tests and standards to be cleared for the most complex commercial jumps.

It is believed that parallel to this, in 2022, Zara joined the team of Valery Sakhashchyk — a former commander of an airborne unit in Brest, who briefly engaged in politics in an alliance with Vadzim Prakopyeu.

According to Zara's acquaintances, Lukashenka's security forces accuse him precisely of working for Sakhashchyk. It is believed that the lieutenant colonel was involved in information gathering and analytical work within the team.

In September 2022, Lukashenka, by his decree, stripped Dzmitry Zara of his rank.

When Sakhashchyk's "headquarters" ceased operations and he himself withdrew from politics, Zara continued to do the same — high-altitude work and preparing enthusiasts for parachute jumps.

But in early 2026, Zara, who lived alone in Poland, suddenly disappeared. As Nasha Niva learned, he soon ended up in the KGB pre-trial detention center, where he faced torture.

The main question is — how did Zara get to Belarus at all? There is no answer to this, but the central version to consider is that the man returned to Belarus on his own.

For the last year before returning to Belarus, Dzmitry Zara tried to legalize his stay in Poland and obtain political asylum. Possibly unsuccessfully.

At the same time, he started to manage his Instagram very specifically, if not to say, crazily. The degree of madness escalated monthly.

Zara published many incoherent messages daily, used ciphers and non-existent words, quoted the Bible, was guided by "higher-order energies," and so on. He appointed himself a general and issued decrees on the "use of divine powers," which he conveyed to members of his family who remained in Belarus.

Dzmitry was in constant video communication with his children. His wife tagged him in her photos while in Belarus. It is likely that he also met with his family in the summer of 2025 in a third country.

Zara united himself and his family into a kind of religious sect called G-13 (Gate-13). He also sought a personal assistant who would help him spread information about Gate-13 to unite other people who want to direct energy "to God, to Allah" upwards according to algorithms.

On February 3, 2026, Dzmitry Zara published a confused post about the self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ on social media. This was his last message on Instagram. Most likely, immediately after this, Zara returned to Belarus.

Former commander of the Brest paratroopers, Valery Sakhashchyk, became "Minister of Defense" in the United Transitional Cabinet in 2022 and tried to create a Belarusian unit in Ukraine.

Mass political repressions in the country began after 2020. At that time, Aliaksandr Lukashenka lost to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya but did not cede power to her, forcing her to leave the country. Mass popular protests against the dictatorship and election fraud took place. The authorities responded with repressions.

According to calculations by the "Belpol" security forces association and human rights defenders, the names of at least 10,050 people who faced politically motivated criminal cases are known. In total, various political repressions (criminal cases, administrative charges, dismissals, searches, forced emigration) affected hundreds of thousands of Belarusians.

The Belarusian authorities consider "extremism" to be the demand for free elections with transparent vote counting, as well as virtually any criticism of the authorities, pro-Russian historical narratives, expressions of solidarity with Ukraine, and anti-war speeches.
