US President Donald Trump signed a law that provides for the expansion of sanctions, duties, and other restrictions against Russia, and also extends the validity of previously imposed sanctions against Iran.
Previously, the bill was approved by both chambers of the US Congress. The document provides for sanctions against the highest Russian leadership, oligarchs and members of their families, companies in the banking and energy sectors, as well as vessels of Russia's so-called shadow fleet.
In addition, the law grants the US President powers to impose duties on the largest buyers of Russian energy resources. The American administration's capabilities for applying the sanctions regime are also expanded.
Congressman Michael McCaul, who initiated the bill, previously emphasized: the approval of the document ahead of the winter months is important because it puts pressure on Putin and his allies before Russia can begin striking civilian infrastructure — objects related to access to light and water.
