Vučić resigned as President of Serbia. To become Prime Minister
The Serbian president did not complete his second term to remain in power.
Aleksandar Vučić announced in an address to the nation that he is resigning from the post of President of Serbia. A little over six months remained until the end of his second term.
“I am grateful to the citizens who twice placed their trust in me. Today I am resigning,” Vučić stated.
The politician prematurely resigned as president to try to retain power. According to the Constitution, one person cannot be president for more than two terms, so Vučić wants to move into the prime minister's chair.
The already former president will lead the list of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in the early parliamentary elections on October 25. If the party wins again, Vučić will lead the government. He was already Prime Minister from 2014-2017.
Vučić first announced his upcoming resignation amidst mass protests that swept Serbia in 2024. The cause was a tragedy in Novi Sad, where 16 people died when a canopy collapsed at the recently reconstructed railway station. One of the demands of the protesters against corruption in power was Vučić's resignation. Since then, he has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to change the Constitution to remain in office as president.
