The Iraqi government announced that American troops have completely left the country. According to a representative of the Iraqi government, all combat units of the USA, as well as forces involved in logistical support, have been withdrawn from Iraq. However, the United States has not yet officially confirmed this information, writes Deutsche Welle.
The US and Iraq agreed on the withdrawal of American troops in 2024. In recent years, about 2,500 American soldiers were stationed in the country. The last American units were located in Erbil in the Kurdish region, at a military base near Baghdad airport, and in the so-called "Green Zone" — the government part of the Iraqi capital.
Since 2014, the US, together with its allies, has been conducting a military operation in Iraq and Syria against the terrorist organization "Islamic State". In 2017, the military defeat of ISIS in Iraq was announced, and in 2019 — in Syria. However, individual cells of the organization have survived and continue to carry out attacks, although they no longer control significant territories in these countries.
The security situation in Iraq has recently deteriorated amid the war in Iran. During this conflict, American facilities in Iraq, as well as positions of Kurdish forces, were subjected to attacks.
The withdrawal of American troops is expected to be celebrated in Iraq as "Independence Day". On September 28, when the established withdrawal deadline ends, four festive events were planned in the country. Government institutions were closed on this day.
Initially, it was assumed that armed groups in Iraq linked to Iran would disarm as American troops withdrew, and their members would then join state security structures. However, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zeidi announced that this measure had been postponed until June 2027.
American troops first entered Iraq in 2003 along with allies. The goal of the operation was to overthrow the then-leader of the country, Saddam Hussein. In 2011, American troops returned to Iraq at the request of the country's government to participate in the fight against "Islamic State".
Since 2015, the German Bundeswehr has also participated in the international operation, with its main task being the training of Iraqi soldiers. The current mandate provides for the possibility of up to 500 German soldiers being stationed in Iraq and is valid until January 2027. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expects that German soldiers will be able to maintain a presence in Erbil even after the completion of the international operation in Iraq.
