Merz: Air Defense is Ukraine's weakest point, but we are looking for solutions
German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany, together with its partners, is looking for ways to strengthen Ukraine's air defense. According to him, air defense is currently the weakest point of Ukrainian defense, writes Deutsche Welle.

At a briefing in Berlin on September 29, Merz announced that he is trying to secure additional supplies of air defense systems for Ukraine in personal conversations with heads of various states and governments. He stressed the importance of preparing the country for the coming winter, including in terms of ensuring the energy system.
According to the German Chancellor, Germany and other European countries are also consulting intensively on further assistance to Ukraine ahead of the European Council meeting scheduled for October 15-16 in Brussels. Specific support for the Ukrainian budget and the use of all possibilities to strengthen air defense are being discussed.
Merz stated that one should not harbor illusions about the further development of the war. According to him, Russia will continue its attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. The Chancellor called such actions war crimes and emphasized that Germany will continue to support Ukraine, as it considers it part of Europe.
He also stated that he would do everything possible to help Ukraine get through what will likely be a very difficult winter.
In addition, Merz commented on the meeting between the foreign ministers of Germany and Russia, which took place on September 26 in New York. According to him, further statements from the Russian side indicate that Moscow is not yet interested in serious and constructive negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
