It became known which country the former head of German intelligence was transferring information to
August Hanning, former head of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany, who is called one of the figures in the most high-profile spy scandal in Europe of the XXI century, was detained on October 6 on suspicion of cooperating with foreign special services and high treason. As reported by Der Spiegel magazine, Hanning was transferring analytical materials, prepared on the basis of secret intelligence information, to Azerbaijan.

It is known that August Hanning was part of the leadership of the public organization and lobbying association "German-Azerbaijani Forum," which is engaged in promoting bilateral projects and, as stated in the publication, serves as one of Baku's tools of influence on German politics.
Hanning headed the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany from 1998 to 2005. After leaving state service in 2010, he mainly engaged in consulting on political and security issues.
The investigation believes that with the help of his former subordinate Manfred D., who continued to work in the service until 2022, Hanning gained access to approximately 2000 secret intelligence documents. Among them were, in particular, weekly reports concerning various international issues, including the situation in Russia, where German intelligence traditionally has important sources of information.
