Lithuanians and Poles installed special gates to block migrants from crossing the border river
At the junction of the borders of Lithuania, Poland, and Belarus, a construction project aimed at strengthening the protection of the EU's external border has been completed. Next to the border marker «Mara» on the Mara River, special gates that lower into the water have been installed, writes the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.

The structure is located in the Lazdijai district of Lithuania. Lithuanian border guards frequently record attempts by groups of migrants coming from Belarus to cross the border in this area, as well as their movement along the river.
The new structure is intended to provide border guards with more rapid access to a strategic section and help more effectively stop illegal border crossings and other violations.
On one side, the gates directly connect with a physical barrier installed on the Lithuanian side, and on the other, with a similar barrier built by Poland. Thus, it will now be significantly more difficult for illegal migrants to use the Mara River to cross the border from Belarus towards the EU.
