Mashed potatoes, meat a la française, and cherries in the yard. Aryna Sabalenka showed a family gathering at her grandma's in Belarus
During her July visit to her native Minsk, then-world number one Aryna Sabalenka introduced her fiancé Georgios Frangulis to her grandmothers, who in turn organized a heartfelt feast. "Sometimes you need to return home and breathe your native air," Aryna said in a 10-minute film about her visit to Minsk, released on her YouTube channel, writes "Komsomolskaya Pravda".
Even on the plane, on her way to Minsk, Aryna anticipated:
"We're going to my grandma's for dinner, and she'll make the best dishes. Salads, meat a la française, chicken… And my favorite: fried bread with cheese and tomato, rubbed with garlic. We'll also try all the pickles."
And so it was, only there were more treats on the table than Aryna could have imagined. Meat a la française was also there. When Georgios inquired about the dish, Aryna explained in detail how it's prepared.
But that would be later, as on the way to grandma's house, the granddaughter and her fiancé stopped by a cherry tree. Aryna showed Georgios that the berries could be eaten directly from the tree. You could even toss them up and catch them with your mouth. Aryna used to do this when she returned from training as a child. Such a greeting from childhood.
One of Aryna's grandmothers lives in the village of Privolny, in the suburbs of Minsk. During the meeting, Aryna shared that she lived with her grandmother Lyudmila from ages 14 to 18:
"She was left alone, and it seemed to me that she was incredibly lonely. I wanted to stay with her; we have a very close relationship, she's like a second mother to me."
Grandma Tamara was also there.
"Privet, babushka!" (Hello, grandma!) — Georgios said in Russian and hugged her.
In the rooms, many framed family photos could be seen, including Aryna's.
— My darling, my golden one. How I missed you, — Lyudmila said tenderly and hugged her granddaughter.
— Oh, just don't cry, — Aryna asked.
— I won't, — her grandmother promised.
The table, set in the living room, would remind many Minsk residents of their old family holidays: salads, pies, mashed potatoes, meat… All delicious and simple. Just like in Aryna's childhood.
"Grandma would wake up with me and prepare a Swedish buffet with any breakfast," smiled the tennis player, who has probably tasted every dish she ever wanted in this world.
After the magnificent feast, the children and grandchildren helped the grandmothers clear the table. Aryna even washed the dishes.
"I'm glad I found the time to come and visit my family. I leave here with a very warm feeling in my heart," Sabalenka said.
