Belarusian surgeons performed a complex inner ear operation for the first time
For the first time in the history of Belarusian medicine, an operation on the inner ear was performed at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Otorhinolaryngology, the press service of the Ministry of Health reported .

The patient was a 52-year-old woman with rare Minor's syndrome. In this condition, the bony wall of the superior semicircular canal of the inner ear thins until a defect forms in it. This can cause severe dizziness, noise and pulsing in the ear, as well as balance disorders.
Previously, such patients in Belarus were not treated surgically, but only had their symptoms managed. The inner ear is a very small and delicate structure responsible for hearing and balance, so the operation requires high precision.
The operation was performed by Ivan Harnastai, head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology for Adults, and Yauhen Peshka, a researcher at the Neurosurgical Department of the RNPC of Neurology and Neurosurgery. They eliminated the defect of the superior semicircular canal through a transmastoid approach.
This is a minimally invasive technique: surgical access is carried out through the mastoid process without wide incisions and trepanation of the skull. It allows reducing the risk of complications, accelerating recovery, and shortening the hospital stay.
Doctors expect that after the first such operation, the technique will be implemented in practice and become available to other Belarusian patients with Minor's syndrome.
