Archaeologists uncovered the mighty foundation of the western wall of Polotsk Saint Sophia Cathedral
During excavations near the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk, archaeologists found a massive brick foundation of the western tower, descending to a depth of 3.6 meters. The research is being conducted by an expedition from Polotsk State University named after Euphrosyne of Polotsk, prior to the start of large-scale restoration of the temple, writes Times.by.

As archaeologist Aliaksei Kots, senior lecturer at the Department of History and Socio-Humanitarian Sciences of PSU, recounted, two test pits were laid near the western tower. Researchers wanted to find out at what depth the monument's foundation lies and what soil it rests on.

As a result, a very massive brick structure was discovered, reaching a depth of 3.6 meters. According to the archaeologist, this testifies to the seriousness of the constructive solutions used during construction.

During archaeological work, researchers found various ancient brick-plinthos with images and signs. Among other finds are a small Uniate pectoral cross from the 18th century, a 19th-century button, Soviet coins, fragments of ceramic pottery, and other artifacts.

Previously, the expedition of Polotsk State University had already discovered fragments of a 12th-century wall near the Saint Sophia Cathedral.
The Saint Sophia Cathedral is currently being actively investigated before restoration. In May, the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve announced a tender for restoration work.
Restoration and repair work in the Saint Sophia Cathedral is planned for 2026–2028.
