Belarusian woman with thyroid cancer released from immigration prison in USA
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released Belarusian citizen Katsiaryna Bartko, who had sought asylum.
She was detained at a facility in Leavenworth, Kansas. This was reported by Reform.news, citing FOX4 TV channel.
Katsiaryna Bartko was released due to a deterioration in her health. The TV channel had previously covered her case.
According to its information, Bartko had cancer. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid gland and now takes medication daily. She arrived in the U.S. in 2022 on a student visa and applied for asylum, citing persecution by the Belarusian authorities.
She was held at the ICE CoreCivic center. Over the weekend, her health deteriorated so much that the woman had to be hospitalized. She is currently undergoing treatment at the University of Kansas Hospital.
After completing treatment, she will be able to return to Miami, provided she uses GPS monitoring. The immigration court hearing is scheduled for the end of the month.
Katsiaryna's detention story resembled an absurd film. It all started on May 6, 2026, with an argument at a party. The couple had a loud argument with other guests at night and left, but someone called the police.
"In Florida, arrests are automatic for such calls, pending clarification of the circumstances – that's the procedure. The detective told me he didn't see any elements of a crime and would close the case. But in the state of Florida – it's almost the only such state in the U.S. – the state can still pursue the case if it deems it necessary. Which it did," said her boyfriend Dzmitry Shyshou.
Katsiaryna was taken into custody; after some time, the court closed the case, but Katsiaryna was not released, but transferred to an immigration prison solely on the basis of a new strict directive against people with expired visas.
