Exceptional Case: Pronya River Eroded Bank with Burial Mounds, Revealing a Pot of Rare Perfection, 5000 Years Old
A vessel, unlike any he had seen before, was noticed at the bottom of the river by Zlobin resident Mikalai Malatkou.
Zlobin resident Mikalai Malatkou was vacationing in his homeland in Slavgorod district. And in the Pronya River near Berezovka village, he stumbled upon a huge hand-moulded pot. The man contacted local historian Aliaksandr Pishchala, who in turn contacted the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences. As reported by the newspaper «Novy Dzen», archaeologists gasped. It turned out to be an undamaged artifact from the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age.
At the end of August, a scientific expedition consisting of archaeologists Aleh Varanenka, Siarhei Linevich, and Pavel Yatsin arrived at the site of the find. They found that the vessel was located at a depth of about three meters in a pit filled with logs.
Aleh Varanenka, a researcher from the Department of Archaeology of Primitive Society, noted that the discovered hand-moulded pot dates back to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, making it at least five thousand years old. The researcher emphasized the uniqueness of the object: similar artifacts of almost ideal preservation are rarely found in Belarus, as typically during excavations, only fragments of ceramics are found, from which it is rare to assemble a complete form.
During the survey of the area, archaeologists also examined the left bank of the Pronya River in the tract of Belaya Hara. There is a burial mound cemetery located there, which was discovered in 1997 by archaeologist Viachaslau Kapytsin.
Scientists established that the monument is gradually being destroyed by the river: it is eroding the high bank.
Of the 21 previously recorded burial mounds, only 14 remain today, and the remaining burials have crumbled into the river. In the photo above, you can see how two more mounds are now on the very edge of the hill.
In the bank exposure next to the burial mounds, the expedition discovered several fragments of hand-moulded ceramics dating back to the last quarter of the 1st millennium AD.
