Canada Could Become the First Associate Member of the European Union
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed creating a new format for Canada's relationship with the EU — associate membership.
Speaking in the European Parliament with an annual address, which was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, she stated the need to "urgently rethink partnership relations", writes Bild.
According to von der Leyen, the EU and Canada should cooperate more closely in manufacturing, technology, defense, energy, artificial intelligence, and the supply of critically important resources. "We share the same values, we have one view of the world," emphasized the head of the EC.
However, this is not about Canada's full accession to the EU.
"Carney previously said that Ottawa seeks a 'unique alliance' with Europe, rather than EU membership. The specific rights and obligations of the new format have not yet been defined. Negotiations are planned to continue at the EU-Canada summit in Montreal in October.
Canada's status as a new strategic super-partner could also serve as a signal to US President Donald Trump and his tough policies on tariffs and the economy.
Canada is the second largest country in the world by territory. It possesses large and not yet fully explored reserves of mineral resources. Previously, it was closely linked economically and politically with the US, but after pressure from the Trump administration and the latter's calls to annex Canada to the US, it embarked on a course to ensure a strategic balance that would guarantee independence.
