In Georgia, a Belarusian who has been waiting for political asylum for five years was detained
In Georgia, Belarusian Lev Mikheev has been detained.

He has been waiting for political asylum since 2021, human rights activist Roman Kislyak, who also lives in this country and is fighting to obtain the same status, told "Pozirk".
According to Kislyak, Mikheev has been waiting for asylum longer than almost any other compatriot. In Georgia, he participated in various actions and received threats from the Belarusian KGB.
Recently, Mikheev contacted the Department of International Protection of the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia to extend his temporary identity document.
This morning, Mikheev was detained in Martkopi, one of the country's ancient villages, and taken to the department in Tbilisi for an interview, which he managed to report to Kislyak. After that, communication was lost.
"Lev's case was considered for about three years. As of today, presumably, he is in the status of an asylum seeker, the case is in the Tbilisi Court of Appeal. But, perhaps, it has already been considered and he was not informed. Then he may be detained for deportation," Kislyak explained.
According to the human rights activist, deportation can be to the country of origin – Belarus or to other countries.
Georgia, which has been ruled since 2012 by the "Georgian Dream" party of pro-Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, has not satisfied a single asylum request from Belarusian citizens. In the first half of 2026, 24 Belarusians were expelled from the country. Alleged reasons: exceeding the period of stay (no more than 365 consecutive days), an expired passport (impossible to exchange at the embassy due to the discriminatory decree of Alexander Lukashenka of September 4, 2023), committing a crime.
