Sudden Flood in Nepal Sweeps Away Up to 40 Homes and Several Bridges VIDEO
A sudden flood on the Budhi Gandaki river destroyed settlements and damaged a hydroelectric power plant construction site. Rescuers are evacuating people by helicopter. The cause of the disaster may have been a landslide that blocked a tributary of the river.

The flood began on the morning of October 11 in Nepal's Gorkha district. According to preliminary estimates by local authorities, the torrent swept away about 40 homes in three settlements, reports The Kathmandu Post.
Four people who were in a structure on the riverbank in Chumchet are reported missing. Separately, there are reports of lost contact with a group of four to five shepherds.

The water destroyed pedestrian and motor vehicle bridges, including the bridge between the Gorkha and Dhading districts. At the hydroelectric power plant construction site, the torrent swept away a construction camp and some equipment. Another 20 to 22 homes in the settlement of Saleri remain under threat.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, a landslide may have blocked one of the tributaries of the Budhi Gandaki. After this barrier broke, the water could have rushed downstream and caused the flood.
Authorities have warned residents downstream of a very high risk of new flooding.
