Ukrainian killed a man with a knife and injured four more in a Polish monastery

The police received a report of the attack around 9:30 AM. Law enforcement officers detained the suspect on the abbey's grounds. It turned out that he did not live in Jarosław: he had arrived in Poland from Germany overnight.

According to the local prosecutor, the man was heading towards a border crossing to exit to Ukraine, but he did not cross the state border there. Investigators have not yet determined how exactly he got to Jarosław and entered the monastery grounds.

According to witnesses, the man might have entered the monastery with a group of schoolchildren. Earlier, a group of students from a local school, brought there by teachers for physical education classes, had entered the monastic gardens.

There is also a version that in the morning the man came to the monastery gate and asked for material assistance. According to witness accounts, the priests, who provide charitable assistance to the needy, sent him home because he might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was allegedly told to return when he was sober. One witness claimed that after this, the man became angry and began to threaten the priests. The investigation has not yet confirmed this version.

The abbess of the Benedictine monastery stated that the attacker had no ties to the monastic community and was not known there. According to her, he appeared very agitated and was dressed in short shorts and a T-shirt, despite the cold weather.

The prosecutor reported that after entering the monastery grounds, the man went into the kitchen area. It was there that his first encounter with the people who later became victims took place. He took a knife from the kitchen, after which the attack continued in the church.

One of the victims sustained numerous stab and cut wounds to the chest and abdomen. He lost a lot of blood, after which his heart stopped. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. Two other victims received very serious injuries and underwent surgery. They also had numerous wounds in the abdominal and chest areas.

The attacker himself was also taken to the hospital. His blood was drawn to check for the presence of alcohol and drugs. After that, the man was transferred to the Jarosław District Police Department. The prosecutor noted that doctors must first determine whether his health condition allows for investigative actions to be conducted with him.

Following the tragedy, the authorities of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship announced the deployment of additional forces to Jarosław to ensure security. The city also decided to increase the number of police patrols. The mayor of Jarosław declared a period of mourning in the city until the end of the week and called for the cancellation of mass events planned for this time. According to him, additional patrols are also necessary due to fears of a possible reaction to the tragedy and new incidents.

Polish politicians reacted to the attack. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the suspect is in police custody and stated that he must be punished in accordance with Polish law. President Karol Nawrocki emphasized the need for a swift and full clarification of all circumstances of the incident and ensuring public safety. Representatives of other Polish political forces also called for establishing the attacker's motives, the circumstances of his stay in Poland, and possible previous contacts with services.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Poland strongly condemned the attack and stated that any manifestations of violence are unacceptable. Diplomats expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, wished a speedy recovery to the injured, and called for calm and mutual support to prevent an increase in social tension.

The investigation is ongoing. The final motives of the attacker and the exact sequence of all events that led to the tragedy have not yet been established.
