Trump and Xi Jinping Demonstrated 'Truly Great Friendship' in Washington
US President Donald Trump called the relationship he developed with Chinese leader Xi Jinping "truly great friendship." Xi began a long-awaited state visit to the US on September 24, and the leaders' talks are taking place against a backdrop of serious disagreements between the two countries, writes Euronews.

Before the start of official talks at the White House, Xi stated that he is ready, together with Trump, to guide China-US relations on a stable path into the future. He emphasized that China and the United States must avoid conflicts and confrontation.
According to Xi Jinping, China and the US are two superpowers that, at this historical moment, bear responsibility for the development and progress of humanity. He expressed confidence that through open, deep, and continuous dialogue, the countries will be able to better understand each other, find common interests, set aside differences, and strengthen mutual trust.
Trump, in turn, stated that after his first election victory in 2016, he and Xi built a relationship based on mutual respect and the interests of the peoples of the two countries. He also recalled the cooperation between the US and China during World War II.
According to Trump, Washington and Beijing are now working on more balanced trade relations. The talks are planned to discuss foreign policy, trade, financial cooperation, security issues, and artificial intelligence.
Xi stated that he expects fair treatment for Chinese companies in the US, and China, according to him, is ready to welcome American business. He emphasized that competition between the countries should be healthy and remain within reasonable limits.
One of the most difficult topics of the negotiations could be Iran. China had previously opposed the American-Israeli war against Iran and criticized the Trump administration's pressure on Beijing to use Chinese influence on Tehran.
It is expected that Xi will also raise the issue of Taiwan again. China considers it one of the most sensitive issues in relations with the US and seeks to have Washington refuse to sell arms to Taiwan. During a meeting in Beijing in May, Trump called the supply of American weapons to Taiwan a strong bargaining chip in relations with China.
In the sphere of trade, Beijing is interested in easing American restrictions on the export of the most advanced high-tech microchips. On Wednesday, the countries agreed to extend a one-year trade truce, which was supposed to end on November 10, by two more months. This should give both sides additional time to work out a longer agreement.
Xi stated that the competition between China and the US should be a race in which countries strive to catch up with each other, rather than a struggle where one necessarily wins and the other loses.
Separately, the Chinese leader dwelled on artificial intelligence. According to him, China and the US have the opportunities and responsibility to develop this technology for the benefit of humanity and to ensure that it always remains under human control and serves the well-being of society.
Earlier, Trump also stated that artificial intelligence would be an important topic of his talks with Xi. This week, the finance ministers of the two countries discussed the possibility of creating a new mechanism to notify each other about incidents related to artificial intelligence.
Concluding his opening remarks, Xi announced that over the next five years, China will invite 100,000 young Americans for study and exchange programs. Additionally, China plans to send two pandas to the Atlanta Zoo. Xi called these animals "envoys of friendship."
