Tennessee inmate Krista Pike survived two lethal injections administered during her execution and was transported to a hospital. Authorities attempted to carry out the sentence following a decision by the US Supreme Court, BBC reports.

Before the execution began, the procedure was halted approximately an hour before the scheduled time: a federal appeals court stated it needed more time to review the defense's arguments, which called for the execution not to proceed.

Later, Pike's lawyer stated that she remained alive after two lethal injections. Already during the execution procedure, the inmate's lawyers filed an urgent motion requesting to stop it.

"Pike lost consciousness, but her heart is still beating; she can be heard snoring," the lawyers' statement said.

One of her representatives told the BBC that 50-year-old Pike was "undergoing resuscitation" after being administered two doses of pentobarbital, a powerful sedative used for executions.

Earlier, the US Supreme Court allowed the execution of a woman from Tennessee. Prior to this, the court had suspended the execution an hour before the appointed time.

The Supreme Court's decision was made on Wednesday around 6:00 PM local time (3:00 AM Thursday in Minsk). The death warrant was set to expire at midnight.

Pike had been awaiting execution since 1996. On Wednesday, a federal appeals court stated it needed time to examine the defense's arguments, which called for the sentence not to be carried out.

However, the Supreme Court granted the request of the Tennessee prosecutor, who demanded the cancellation of the deferral that had been decided by the lower court.
