In the Minsk Regional Court, a 23-year-old officer from Bobruisk, Yauhen Zharykau, was sentenced for "treason against the state" (Part 2, Article 356 of the Criminal Code). The man was sentenced to 19 years in an enhanced regime penal colony, as well as a fine of 500 base units (22,500 rubles).

The case was heard in closed session, so the details of the charges are unknown. The verdict was handed down back in May, but the Viasna human rights defenders learned about it only now.
Yauhen Zharykau hails from Bobruisk. After graduating from a military educational institution, he served in Maryina Horka, where the fifth separate special forces brigade is stationed. The reason for his detention is unknown.
