Sweden warned that in case of attack, it would strike deep into Russia
In the event of a Russian attack, Sweden will no longer limit itself to defending its own territory. This was stated by Colonel Carl Bergqvist, head of the Swedish Air Force's Air Warfare Centre. According to him, the new concept involves offensive actions and the destruction of targets deep within enemy territory.

Bergqvist emphasized that this is not about preventive strikes. The goal of this strategy is to deter a potential aggressor, who must understand that in the event of war, hostilities will not only take place on Swedish territory.
The experience of the war in Ukraine also influenced the revision of the Swedish Air Force's strategy. Sweden considers it important to prevent the enemy from gaining air superiority. Therefore, in addition to the existing tactics of rapid redeployment and dispersal of aviation, the ability to strike targets on enemy territory has been added.
According to the new concept, strikes on logistical facilities, headquarters, and airbases deep within Russian territory could slow down or disrupt a military operation in its initial stages.
One of the key elements of the strategy should be the integration of Taurus KEPD 350 cruise missiles with JAS 39 Gripen fighters. These missiles have a range exceeding 500 kilometers, can fly at an altitude of up to 50 meters, and are designed to destroy fortified targets. In addition, the Swedish armed forces plan to acquire systems with even greater range. Documents submitted to the government requested cruise and ballistic missiles capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 2,000 kilometers. The distance from Stockholm to Moscow is approximately 1,200 kilometers.
The new concept also includes the use of highways as runways, strengthening air defense, combating drones, and developing reconnaissance capabilities using drones and satellites.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sweden revised its threat assessment for its security and joined NATO in 2024. Thus, the country, which had maintained neutrality for over 200 years, became part of the Alliance's northern flank defense structure along with Finland, Norway, and the Baltic states.
Previously, Swedish intelligence warned that Russia could conduct limited military operations in the region within several years. Among Sweden's advantages is its geographical location: proximity to the Baltic region allows for quicker response to threats, and the ability to use Gripen fighters from dispersed positions increases the resilience of Swedish aviation.
