Bulgarian Prime Minister Calls on Europe to Make Concessions to Putin
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that Europe should reconsider the balance of military, economic, and diplomatic instruments and pay more attention to diplomacy in relations with Russia. According to him, this is necessary to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict and end the war in Ukraine, Euronews writes .
Speaking at the Euronews Defence and Space Summit, Radev stated that Europe must consider the worst possible scenario and assess the risks. He noted that there is currently an attempt to achieve a conventional military victory over the largest nuclear power, but the presence of nuclear weapons in Russia must be taken into account.
According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, the potential for diplomacy has not yet been exhausted, so European countries should more actively use diplomatic channels. Radev stated that Russia might try to use its "nuclear card" if it considers itself weakened or cornered.
Radev also recalled that in July, Bulgaria announced its withdrawal from the coalition of countries advocating for continued financial and military support for Ukraine. He criticized further arms supplies to Kyiv, stating that the final architecture of peace would be determined by diplomacy, not by arms deliveries. According to him, it is necessary to open channels of communication and listen more to each other.
At the same time, the Bulgarian Prime Minister also criticized the belligerent statements of the Russian leadership, but called on European leaders to consider the possible consequences of further escalation.
Earlier, Rumen Radev also stated the impossibility of Ukraine defeating Russia and opposed some sanctions. Among other things, he was critical of sanctions against Patriarch Kirill and the head of "Lukoil" Vagit Alekperov.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister's statements came against the backdrop of new warnings from Russia regarding the situation around the Kaliningrad Oblast. Russian diplomats in several European countries accused NATO of escalating tensions and stated that Russia would meet any potential aggression against the region with the strongest possible response, including the use of nuclear weapons. According to reports, a similar warning was also sent to NATO through closed diplomatic channels.
