Belarusian political refugee Lev Mikheyeu, who was detained last week and then deported from Georgia to Armenia, will seek asylum in the latter country. Human rights activist Raman Kisliak reported this to the "Pozirk" publication.

According to Raman Kisliak, Mikheyeu has already managed to find relatively inexpensive housing, and he is now gradually settling into his daily life. However, rental prices in Armenia have recently increased significantly due to the arrival of Russian citizens who fear a new wave of mobilization for the war against Ukraine.
In Armenia, Mikheyeu was also detained because he is in the CIS wanted database at Minsk's request. However, he was soon released. Armenia does not extradite foreigners who are persecuted in their homeland for political reasons.
After 2020, Georgia became one of the countries where Belarusians who faced persecution or feared repression in their homeland moved. One can stay in the country without a visa for up to 365 consecutive days.
However, throughout this time, the Georgian authorities have not granted a single asylum application from Belarusians. Mikheyeu unsuccessfully sought it for five years. He was finally rejected on June 29, 2026, according to a statement from the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Armenia, unlike Georgia, grants asylum to citizens of Belarus.
