Latvia extended the operation to combat illegal migration on the border with Belarus
Latvia has extended the "Vilkatis" ("Werewolf") operation until December 31, 2026, aimed at combating illegal migration on the Belarusian-Latvian border. The Latvian government made this decision on October 6.

The Latvian Border Guard Service explains that work on restoring infrastructure damaged during the storm on August 22-23 is still ongoing at the border. In addition, the border service is enhancing its capabilities, including expanding the use of drones. Therefore, it was decided to further strengthen security control on the Belarusian-Latvian border to prevent illegal border crossings by migrants.
Since the beginning of the operation, Latvian border guards have stopped more than 1400 people who attempted to illegally cross the border. Several migrant smugglers were also detained.
In addition, Latvian services found and eliminated two tunnels that led from the Belarusian side of the border.
Operation Vilkatis began on August 11 and was originally scheduled to end in September. It was later extended until October, and now the operation's duration has been extended until the end of the year.
