A Belarusian collected mushrooms in the Chernobyl zone and took them to a laboratory. What were the results?

Belarusian mushroom hunter and blogger Alexander Harbatsevich decided to check how contaminated with radionuclides mushrooms in the Chernobyl zone are. For this, he went to the Narovlya district, approximately 60 kilometers from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and shared the results of his experiment on TikTok, writes Tochka.by.

Harbatsevich noted that mushrooms in this area are almost never collected. During his "silent hunt," he saw only a few cut mushrooms. For the test, he collected four types: pine boletes, bay boletes, slippery jacks, and yellow-gilled boletes. Visually, all of them were beautiful, firm, and without noticeable damage.

Examining one of the boletes, the mushroom hunter speculated that significant radioactive contamination might be hidden beneath its external beauty.

Once in Minsk, the collected mushrooms were sent to the veterinary and sanitary expertise laboratory at Komarovsky Market.

The "cleanest" of the four types were the boletes, but even in them, the level of radioactive contamination was 1295 Bq/kg, while the permissible limit is 370 Bq/kg. Thus, the norm was exceeded approximately 3.5 times.

In bay boletes, 14,628 Bq/kg were found, and in slippery jacks — 15,253 Bq/kg. This is approximately 40 and 41 times, respectively, more than the permissible level.

The most contaminated were the yellow-gilled boletes. They recorded 30,438 Bq/kg, which exceeds the permissible norm by more than 82 times.

The author of the video also asked specialists whether such mushrooms could be made safer by soaking and boiling. According to their explanation, the norm of 370 Bq/kg is established for fresh mushrooms, and after soaking and boiling, some radionuclides can indeed be removed. However, given the results obtained, specialists do not advise taking risks and recommend not consuming such mushrooms.
