New Spider-Man Film Tops Ranking of Highest-Grossing Films in US History
The film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" starring Tom Holland set a new record in North American cinema box office. It surpassed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which held the top spot since 2015 with earnings of $936 million, writes Variety.
In 47 days of release, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" collected $936.773 million in North America. Now, the filmmakers are contemplating whether it can become the first film in history to earn $1 billion in this market. However, without a re-release in cinemas, achieving this goal is considered unlikely.
The film's worldwide gross reached $2.45 billion. According to the data provided, this is the third-highest result in cinema history, after 2009's "Avatar" with $2.9 billion and "Avengers: Endgame" with $2.7 billion. The film surpassed "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Titanic."
The film, which is the fourth solo Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, was released in late July. In its opening weekend, it grossed a record $360 million in North America and $932 million worldwide. The billion-dollar mark was crossed just six days after the premiere, and the film earned $2 billion in three weekends.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" also became the fastest film to reach the $700, $800, and $900 million marks in North American box office. It took 13, 19, and 36 days, respectively. Furthermore, it is only the second film in history to gross over $900 million domestically.
The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." The plot continues the events of the 2021 film "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
High interest in the new film was due to viewers' desire to learn about the consequences of the main character's decision. Additional attention was also drawn to the question of who exactly actress Sadie Sink played. In the film, she portrayed Jean Grey. The success of the picture was also aided by positive viewer reviews, which sustained its popularity throughout its run.
For Marvel, this result marks an important success after a commercially unsuccessful 2025, when films like "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Fantastic Four: First Steps" did not meet expectations. The studio's next major project is set to be "Avengers: Doomsday," with its premiere scheduled for December. The film will feature a large number of superheroes, and Robert Downey Jr. will play not Iron Man, but the villain Doctor Doom.
