In the "Best Documentary Short Film" category.
For the first time in the 97-year history of the Academy Awards, the Vatican plans to submit a film for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, writes Variety.
“Green Lava” is a documentary short film created with the participation of the Vatican, centered on a young Italian man, Giacomo, who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The film will premiere this week in Los Angeles — ahead of its submission for consideration in the "Best Documentary Short Film" category.
“Green Lava” will be screened from September 18 to 24 at the Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills. After the theatrical run, the creative team will complete the necessary formalities for submitting the film for Oscar consideration, a representative of the picture said.
This submission will mark the first time a film created by the Vatican will contend for an Academy Award.
The film was directed by Lia Beltrami and Ali Aksu.
The 39-minute film, shot against the breathtaking landscapes of the Dolomites, is described in promotional materials as "a poignant reflection on independence, the human spirit, and the transformative power of community in the face of adversity."
The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14, 2027.
Shortlists will be announced on December 15, 2026, and nominations on January 21.
