Following 7 tons of radioactive chanterelles from Belarus, 20 tons of radioactive blueberries were also not allowed into Lithuania

Lithuanian border guards did not allow 20 tons of blueberries from Belarus to be imported, in which an excess of the permissible radiation level was found. The incident occurred at the Salcininkai border crossing point on November 3, reports the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania.

On Tuesday morning, a DAF truck registered in Lithuania with a Krone semi-trailer registered in Estonia arrived in Lithuania from Belarus. As the truck passed through a stationary radiation control system, a so-called radiation gate, the devices signaled an excess of the natural radiation background.

The truck was driven by a 46-year-old citizen of Belarus who has a Lithuanian temporary residence permit.

Upon repeated inspection with a portable radiation meter, it was found that the forest berries emitted 0.07 µSv/h (microsieverts per hour). Using a radioactive isotope identifier, border guards determined that the source of the radiation was the artificial radionuclide cesium-137.

The incident was immediately reported to specialists from the Lithuanian Radiation Safety Centre. Since food products imported into Lithuania and the European Union must not be contaminated with artificial radionuclides, specialists recommended not allowing this cargo into the country's territory.

After processing the necessary documents, the truck with 20 tons of radioactive blueberries was sent back to Belarus.

This is already the second case in the past few days where Lithuanian border guards have returned a cargo to Belarus with an excess of the permissible radiation level. On Saturday, at the Medininkai border crossing point, seven tons of chanterelles with an elevated level of ionizing radiation were not allowed into Lithuania.
