Andrei Aliaksandrau: Behind bars, I knew that Belarusian journalism was working, and so I calmly assembled pallets

«And your head shouldn't ache about any issues». Media manager Andrei Aliaksandrau, who was released on Wednesday, joked about this today in Vilnius during the conference «Belarusian Media: Quality, Trust, Standards».

During his speech at the conference, Andrei Aliaksandrau thanked Belarusian journalists for maintaining their professional activities and highlighted the importance of the support he and his family received during his imprisonment, reports Radio Svaboda with reference to «Pozirk».

«I want to thank everyone very much for the great support I felt every day. I am very grateful to all the people who supported my family,» he said. «I know about most of you — all my friends, colleagues, people I worked with at BAJ and BelaPAN.

And it is very, very important; it simply made me know daily that everything is fine, people are working, the cause continues, I can calmly assemble pallets, and my head doesn't have to ache about any issues».

«The world didn't end with us, and we are not ending, because we have each other. No bars... Bars are just a convention, just circumstances. But we are stronger than circumstances, because we are together, we are very cool and awesome. I am very pleased to be in the company of normal people, at least with hair on their heads,» Aliaksandrau added.

Andrei Aliaksandrau was detained in Belarus on January 12, 2021, along with Iryna Zlobina. They later married behind bars. Andrei was sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony under four articles of the Criminal Code of Belarus.

On September 16, 2026, Aliaksandrau and Zlobina were released and departed for Lithuania.
