John Coale met with Lithuanian leaders after returning from Minsk
John Coale, Special Envoy of the US President for Belarus, met with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius after returning from Minsk. During the talks, they discussed the situation in Belarus, the release of political prisoners, and regional security issues.

After the meeting with Coale, which took place on September 16, Nausėda stated that the release of some political prisoners does not signify a change in the regime in Minsk. According to him, the humanitarian progress achieved was a result of US pressure, but the overall security situation remains practically unchanged.
The Lithuanian president noted that drones are flying into Lithuania from Belarusian territory, the arrival of illegal migrants continues, and Minsk is escalating the nuclear threat near NATO borders. As an example, he mentioned plans to expand the Belarusian NPP in Astravets.
At the same time, Nausėda welcomed the agreement on the release of some political prisoners and promised the US comprehensive assistance. Lithuania is ready to support the US humanitarian mission, as well as assist released prisoners in crossing the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.
John Coale also held a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius. The head of the Lithuanian government stated that the country highly appreciates the US efforts to release Belarusian political prisoners and reduce tensions in the region.
Sinkevičius emphasized that American diplomatic involvement helps reduce hybrid threats and strengthen the security of Lithuania and neighboring countries. He also asked to convey gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his efforts in regional security.
According to the Lithuanian Prime Minister, the more attention Washington pays to the region, the greater its security becomes. Sinkevičius assured that Lithuania will continue to be a reliable ally of the US.
