In Italy, Romanians tried to scam a person with old Belarusian rubles
Scams with old Belarusian rubles, which are already out of circulation, have reached Italy. The local publication La Voce del Canavese reported one such case that occurred in the province of Turin, Piedmont region, writes the website "Belarusians and the World".

The incident occurred on September 29 on the road between the communes of Cavagnolo and San Sebastiano da Po. Two men in a Mercedes CLS with British license plates stopped another car. They explained to the driver that they were going to France but unexpectedly ran out of euros and asked to exchange their foreign currency for 500 euros.
The men were well-dressed — in jackets and ties — spoke very politely and did not exert pressure. However, the driver suspected a trick, refused the offer, and immediately reported everything to law enforcement.
Police soon apprehended the suspects. They turned out to be Romanian citizens born in 1983 and 1985. It was found that the banknotes they offered for exchange actually had significantly less value than they tried to represent.
The men were found to have 36 banknotes from various countries. Among them were Belarusian rubles, which lost their status as legal tender after the 2016 monetary reform, as well as old banknotes from Romania, Albania, Czechoslovakia, Singapore, and other countries. In addition, 280 euros were found on the detainees.
The foreign currency was confiscated, and the detainees were handed over to the judicial authorities for further proceedings.
