A resonant story is being discussed in Italy. 4-year-old Anna Rosa Bartolotta from Palermo recently died of diphtheria. She was not vaccinated because her anti-vaxxer parents did not want to, despite vaccination being mandatory in Italy. As a result, the parents are now under investigation, LaPresse reports. They were accused of involuntary manslaughter by omission — the Palermo prosecutor's office believes that the refusal of the mandatory diphtheria vaccination directly led to the girl's death.
The family is raising four other children, who are also not vaccinated. In the Zen district, where the family lived, people believe that vaccination can cause autism, and for this reason, some parents categorically refuse to give their children mandatory vaccinations.
The cousin of the girl who died of diphtheria is also in a children's hospital and has tested positive for diphtheria.
An emotional post from the mother of the girl who died of diphtheria appeared on social media. "I wish you never, hear me, never have to deal with incompetent doctors who underestimated my daughter's condition when she was brought to the emergency room several times. And there are papers that testify to this, not foolish tongues that spout nonsense for hype and pass judgment."
"We, the parents," the post says, "did not confuse diphtheria with tonsillitis. The cause of my daughter's death is still unknown, as nothing has been confirmed yet: it's only a suspicion of diphtheria."
