Wearing a medical mask and threatening with an object resembling a pistol, the criminal carried out an audacious attack on a jewelry store on Nezavisimosti Avenue in Minsk on Friday, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs press service.
He stole jewelry. The attacker fled the crime scene, and the saleswoman pressed the alarm button.
The 34-year-old Minsk resident prepared thoroughly for the robbery. For the past two years, he had lived in Moscow, and after returning to Belarus in May 2026, he was unemployed and planned the attack. Having chosen a store on Nezavisimosti Avenue, he meticulously studied routes and the locations of surveillance cameras.
It is known that he took conspiracy measures and changed clothes in the attic of one of the houses on Kalinovsky Street, and then tried to leave for Russia with the stolen goods.
Forensic experts promptly examined the medical mask he discarded. Through the DNA database, the person was identified — he turned out to be a previously unconvicted resident of the capital.
The man was removed from a scheduled Minsk — St. Petersburg bus directly during its movement in the Orsha district.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the arrest was carried out by "Almaz" special forces, as the attacker was armed with a knife and threatened to use weapons, and law enforcement feared hostage-taking among passengers. All stolen valuables, totaling over 400,000 rubles, were found in the detainee's bag.
The stolen goods have been confiscated.
A criminal case has been initiated for robbery, and the man faces up to 10 years in prison.
