"Alesia" Becomes History. One of Belarus' Oldest Knitwear Enterprises Is Being Liquidated
One of Belarus' oldest light industry enterprises — JSC "Alesia" — is being liquidated. The factory, which traces its history back to 1961, has not been operating in its main profile for several years, and its territory in the center of Minsk is planned to be transformed into a residential quarter, writes the publication "Belorusy i rynok".
The decision to liquidate "Alesia" was made by shareholders on August 10 at an extraordinary meeting. The reason cited was the economic inexpediency of further economic activity. Practically the entire share package of the enterprise — 99.3% — belongs to the "Bellegprom" concern, so the outcome of the vote was predictable.
The factory experienced its best times in the early 1990s. It was then that its shareholders invested in the construction of an elite multi-storey building at the intersection of the former Varvasheni Street and Kropotkina Street.
However, from the 2000s, "Alesia" began to experience financial and production problems. The enterprise could have joined the sewing holding of Latvian businessman Vasily Melnik, but the state prevented this deal from happening.
Already from the late 2010s, "Alesia" practically ceased to engage in the production of knitwear. Until recently, the main source of income was renting out premises. About a hundred legal entities and individual entrepreneurs used them.
Now, the enterprise must stop even this activity. The reason is the plans of the Minsk authorities to develop the territory of the former factory.
As early as 2025 (NOTE: This is likely a typo in the original text and probably meant 2015 or earlier, given the context of "already in 2025"), Viktor Guts'ko, chairman of the architecture and urban planning committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee, announced that the "Alesia" territory is among the first industrial zones planned for development. The site is located in the central part of the city and close to the future third metro line, so residential construction is planned here.
