UK and France hand over secret data to Ukraine for the production of SCALP cruise missiles. For the Crimean Bridge?
Ukrainian-assembled weapons remove political restrictions on strikes against targets in Russia from allies.
The UK has allowed the European defense company MBDA to transfer secret technical documentation about British components for long-range SCALP cruise missiles — the French analogue of British Storm Shadow missiles — to Kyiv. This was announced by the office of UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
This decision will allow Ukraine and France to deploy local production of relevant ammunition on Ukrainian territory.
The announcement of the decision was timed to Ukraine's Independence Day.
“On the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the Ukrainian people should have no doubt: the UK supports you today and will support you for as long as it takes. <...> The friendship between our two countries will long outlive Russia’s illegal war,” Burnham said.
In mid-July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after talks with Emmanuel Macron, announced that France would provide Ukraine with licenses for the production of SCALP cruise missiles, AASM Hammer guided bombs, and Aster 30 anti-aircraft missiles.
The French SCALP and British Storm Shadow are practically the same missile with identical characteristics under different names.
The long-range SCALP cruise missile was developed based on the French Apache missile. Its main purpose is the destruction of hardened targets (bunkers, command posts, and bridges) with a penetrating explosion, unlike the Apache, which used cluster munitions for area coverage.
SCALP is a missile that, if successfully used, is capable of destroying the Crimean Bridge.
