Statkevich: Currently, only formal independence is saving us from direct involvement in the Russian-Ukrainian war
Mikalai Statkevich congratulated Belarusians on the 35th anniversary of independence in his Telegram channel and wrote what is most important now.

«On August 25, 1991, after the defeat of the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP) coup in Moscow and under pressure from a multi-thousand strong rally near the House of Government, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR, at its extraordinary session, gave the force of constitutional law to the Declaration of State Sovereignty, adopted a year prior.
Thus, it was on August 25, 1991, that our country became an independent state. And no manipulations with historical dates can cancel this indisputable fact, nor are they capable of erasing it from our memory.
Today marks exactly 35 years since the main event in the life of our state. And although the country's rulers soon began to trade independence to maintain their power over us without conducting necessary difficult reforms, Belarusians have already understood its importance and necessity. Especially now, when only formal independence is currently saving us from direct involvement in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Currently, a situation has been created in the country where it is almost impossible to gather together to publicly declare support for independence, to show Moscow's imperial revanchists and their local client our position, and to duly celebrate our Independence Day.
But many thousands of Belarusians on both sides of the border consider the independence of their country the highest value and are ready to defend it with weapons in hand.
Let's preserve the independent Belarusian state, so that Belarus lives! Happy holiday to us, Belarusians!» — wrote Mikalai Statkevich.
