Lukashenka: It's a fake that we imprison twice as many political prisoners as we release
He once again stated that there are allegedly no political prisoners in Belarus, BelTA writes.

"John, and one more remark. There was a lot of talk before our meeting here with you about the release of, as you call them, political prisoners. Although I once again urge you not to deceive ourselves. There are no political prisoners in Belarus, because there is no such article in our legislation. But there is a lot of talk about this: about the release of people who (as a lawyer, an advocate, you understand this perfectly well) are, according to the law, under investigation or in correctional labor colonies," Lukashenka said.
"I'm leading you to the main topic. Our fugitives are promoting the topic in the West and, I feel, according to my information, they have convinced you that we are releasing someone here, but, continuing repressions, we detain twice as many people in their place. I want to tell you publicly that this is an absolute lie," Lukashenka said.
According to Viasna's calculations, there are currently 912 political prisoners in custody; human rights defenders recognized 11 people as such today.
The last mass release of political prisoners took place in March 2026. Then 250 people were set free. In the following six months, another 224 people received political prisoner status.
