A Belarusian will not receive $40,000 for his son who died at the front. His ex-wife and granddaughter proved more cunning
Aliaksandr Yakubouski abandoned his family long ago, but when the death benefits started being distributed, he put himself in line. He argued that since he paid alimony, he should also get something.
Aliaksei Yakubouski, a resident of Savinsky settlement in Arkhangelsk Oblast, died at the front on March 27, 2024. His obituary stated that his decision to go to the front was a conscious one, although the database of the deceased indicates that Yakubouski was taken to war from behind bars. However, one does not necessarily contradict the other — perhaps he consciously decided not to sit in prison, but to go kill.
At the time of his death, Yakubouski was 29 years old. He left behind a daughter, Ksenia.
The girl is still too young to participate in the fight for her father's death benefits, but someone represented her interests in court.
On one side fought the daughter's representative and Valiantsina Krauchanka (the mother of the deceased). On the other — Belarusian citizen Aliaksandr Yakubouski, the father of the deceased.
The father wanted to receive his third of the $115 thousand death benefits, but the others tried to push him away from the table.
Here's the backstory. Aliaksandr Yakubouski and Valiantsina Krauchanka were married and had two sons. When the younger son was still a child, the father left the family and moved to Belarus for permanent residence. They officially divorced much later. Aliaksandr took no part in raising or the lives of his sons: he did not meet with them, nor did he inquire about their health or education. This was confirmed in court by the elder son Uladzimir and a family neighbor. Both testified that the father himself avoided meeting with the children, even when he lived nearby.
Aliaksandr himself insisted in court that his ex-wife prevented him from seeing his son. He considered the fact that he had no alimony arrears as the main argument in favor of his fatherhood.
But the court decided that this was irrelevant — arguing that death benefits are not necessarily paid to biological fathers, but rather to «thank on behalf of the state precisely those who truly raised the defender of the Fatherland».
So Aliaksandr Yakubouski was left with nothing. The $115 thousand was divided between the soldier's mother and his daughter.
