48-year-old actor James Van Der Beek, star of the series "Dawson's Creek", has died, writes the BBC.
"Our beloved James David Van Der Beek peacefully passed away this morning," read a statement on his social media. "He met his final days with courage, faith, and dignity."
The actor had been battling colon cancer for several years, which was diagnosed in 2023.
Van Der Beek was a father of six children and starred in several popular TV series and films of the late 1990s and early 2000s, including "Dawson's Creek" and "Varsity Blues".
In an interview with Business Insider, he revealed that he began experiencing changes in his bowel movements, which is a common symptom of colon cancer. Before getting screened, he stopped drinking coffee to see if it would help, but the test showed that the cancer was already at stage three.
After his diagnosis, Van Der Beek actively drew attention to raising awareness about the importance of colon screenings.
"I learned a lot," he told Business Insider. "And if, thanks to me, at least someone can avoid a similar experience, that will be a true miracle for me."
