Siarhiej Laznica's ‘In the Fog’ based on Vasil Bykau's novel to be shown on May, 25.
Belarusian cinematographers’ search was long. Still, they came back to Vasil Bykau, an unfading Belarusian classic. To Bykau’s conflict of pride and self-preservation, truth and lies, fate and choice. To Bykau’s hate to embellished history To Bykau’s war philosophy. To Bykau who is not to be mentioned by Lukashenka and his henchmen. The world became interested in Bykaus’ story and it was welcomed at Cannes Film Festival, where the cream of the cinema gathers every year.
Bookmakers list ‘In the Fog’ fifth to receive the Palm d’Or.
It is the first time when a film partially produced in Belarus is on the competition selection of Cannes Film Festival. Furthermore it is the first such film based on a Belarusian novel.
Siarhiej Laznica was born on September, 5th 1964 in Baranovichi (Belarus, former USSR). He grew up in Kiev, and in 1987 graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic with a degree in Applied Mathematics. In 1987-1991 he was employed at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics, working on Artificial Intelligence research. He also worked as a translator from Japanese. In 1997 Siarhiej Laznica graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow with a degree in feature film making.
He has been making documentary films since 1996, and he has directed 11 documentaries. Mr. Laznica has received numerous international and national awards, including festival prizes in Karlovy Vary, Leipzig, Oberhausen, Paris, Madrid, Toronto, Jerusalem, St-Petersburg, as well as the Russian National Film awards ‘Nika’ and ‘Laurel.’
“Siarhiej Laznica chose Bykau’s novel for its existential drama, for the situation of ultimately hard choice,” says Mr. Laznica's friend.
The motion picture was shot in Latvia within 28 days.
‘In the Fog’ is an international project. It was produced by Bielarusfilm (Belarus), MA.JA.DE Fiction (Germany), GP (Russia), Rija Films (Latvia), Lemming Film (Netherlands) and Eurimages fund.
