Lionel Messi's Football Business: The Argentine Buys a Second Spanish Club
Spanish second division club Eldense has announced that legendary Argentine footballer Lionel Messi has reached a "preliminary agreement" to become the club's majority shareholder, writes BBC.
Eldense will be the second Spanish club Messi has invested in: in April, he acquired the Catalan club Cornellà.
"A preliminary agreement has been reached with Lionel Messi for the acquisition of shares currently held by Grupo TH Soluciones, which will make him the club's majority shareholder," Eldense said in a statement. "The deal now depends on the completion of remaining legal and contractual procedures, including the due diligence process, as well as obtaining the necessary approval from Spain's National Sports Council (CSD)."
The Alicante club has collected two points from four matches this season and, sitting 20th in La Liga 2, parted ways with head coach Claudio Barragán earlier this week. Last year, the club finished second in the third division (Tercera) and was promoted. Eldense has never played in the top division.
Cornellà plays in the fifth division of Spanish football and stated in April that Messi's acquisition "strengthens his close ties with Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia."
